Cannery Row Rose Fish Handplane
This double concave, glossy, fish-shaped handplane was a special commission and is a stunning, performance bodysurfer. The lighter wood comes from Alaskan Cedar benches used by thousands of visitors at the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. The old growth redwood at the nose is from the porch of an old Victorian home in Santa Cruz, CA. The thin, dark center stringer is Indian rosewood from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The redwood stripes come from the foundation of John Steinbeck's house in Pacific Grove, CA where he wrote his first few novels. The Steinbeck wood was sourced for us by Rene Gaudette of Houston's Home Improvement and Repair.
This handplane uses Entropy Super Sap Epoxy bio-resin which is made using mostly tree sap. The hand strap is nylon and adjustable. It is covered with offcuts from O'Neill Wetsuit product development, and the wood is shaped with our unique, ergonomic hand fit. The hardware is solid brass. As with all Ventana handplanes, this one floats so you can easily pass it between friends in the waves.
This handplane comes with a Ventana, double-thick, reclaimed towel bag with a Paracord drawstring from Khordz mugs. An eighth grade seamstress in Soquel, California creates these unique bags for us!
