This board was created to match the Ventana snowboard collaboration with Haven Skis and Reason Board Co. The snowboard is sold but the surfboard comes with one of two free, matching Finless Skateboard Co. longboards!
The bottom deck of the surfboard and the top deck of the snowboard incorporate the Ventana Treefish logo which is infused with hidden meaning. Both boards include Doug fir and Alaskan yellow cedar from the Western Flyer boat, reclaimed flame maple, and California Grizzly bears made of claro walnut salvaged from Spreckles, CA and donated to us by Osgood Design. The Grizzly is walking on inlayed abalone to represent ice and water. There's also a dot of abalone inlay embedded in the cork at the tip of the nose.
The twin fins on the surfboard are made of Doug fir from hull of the original Western Flyer boat, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew chartered this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published
his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.
The top deck of the surfboard is made of offcuts from other Ventana surfboard projects, hence the name "Boneyard." The woods used are: redwood from a salvaged hot tub, Alaskan yellow cedar and Doug fir from the Western Flyer boat; fiddleback redwood from the Soquel mountains; Honduras mahogany, spruce, and Indian rosewood from Santa Cruz Guitar Company, redwood from John Steinbeck's first house in Pacific Grove, California; salvaged Doug fir; Crayola pencils of various colors; mahogany from Poke House, oak from Martin Ray Winery by way of USA Millwork, curly redwood, black walnut from USA Millwork, Doug fir from the San Francisco Bay Bridge reconstruction project, and 5000 year old bog oak from RePercussion Drums in the UK.
The surfboard has cork rails and hand-burned pyrography mountains and water to match the mountains on the snowboard. Both boards use bio-based epoxy from Entropy Resins. The surfboard is glassed with Aerialite fiberglass inside and out. The vent plug is made of oxidized white oak from the ribs of the Western Flyer boat
This surfboard is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's two art pieces in one. It is made in Santa Cruz, California by master artisan Martijn Stiphout. The snowboard was created in Colorado using Ventana reclaimed woods by Haven Skis and Reason Board Co.
Includes a Ventana Save-A-Surf Box, a wooden display sign, and a handmade bag by Sagebrush Board Bags created using coffee bean sacks and unique, remnant fabrics.
